Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad is famous for its association with Mahatma Gandhi and Sabarmati ashram is a historical epitome of Gandhiji’s journey for India’s freedom. Located on the banks of river Sabarmati, the ashram lied between a cemetery and a prison. An apt location as Gandhiji believed that a Satyagrahi will likely end his life in either a prison or in a cemetery. Gandhiji lived in the ashram from 1917 to 1930 and the ashram was key to many important events in India’s freedom struggle like the Dandi March.Ahmedabad with kids

Today Sabarmati ashram serves as a tribute to Gandhiji’s journey with a dearth of pictures and records from his time. It is a reminder of his ideology and principles that brought together millions of Indians and inspired them to attain their freedom.

Legend goes that the construction of the stepwell was started by Rana Veer Singh in 15th  century to save his people from water problems. But before the project got completed, the kingdom was attacked by Mohammed Begda, an adjoining ruler and Rana Veer Singh was killed in battle. The victorious king, Mohammed Begda mesmerised by the beauty of Rani Rooda, Rana Veer Singh’s widow, proposed marriage with the dowager.

It is believed that she said yes on the condition that he would first complete the building of the stepwell. Begda agreed and once the well was completed, he reminded the queen of her promise to marry him. However, the queen who had achieved her objective of completing the stepwell started by her husband decided to end her life by jumping in the well rather than marrying the king. The Sanskrit inscription in the stepwell narrates parts of the story and praises the queen for her selflessness and sacrifice.

Jama  Masjid

Ahmedabad was founded by Ahmad Shah in the year 1411. As per legend, Ahmad Shah was camping on the bank of river Sabarmati when he saw a hare chasing a dog. He was surprised and turned to his religious teacher who said that it was because the land was blessed. And thus, Ahmad Shah decided to build his capital on this unique piece of land and called it Ahmedabad in honour of the four Ahmads including himself and his religious advisor, Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh.

Travel

We found traveling within Ahmedabad very convenient. The public transport is quick and well connected. However, if you are traveling in Ahmedabad with kids and family, cabs could be a better option to explore. Ola and Uber both work very well in Ahmedabad. Else your hotel desk will surely be willing to arrange taxis. We also found autos very convenient and reliable for shorter distances. It is also a fun way to see the city when you are exploring Ahmedabad with kids.
